Greenways Block Grant Program

Overview

This mini-grant program was established in 2009 to implement the recommendations contained in the Northwest PA Greenways Plan, which works to accomplish statewide goals and priorities on a regional level, utilizing local capacity.

Grant funds are leveraged through partnerships with the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR)  to reduce the local match requirement, supporting smaller-scoped projects which may not have been eligible or unable to compete for alternative funding methods.

The Northwest Commission is proud to coordinate the Greenways Block Grant program, advancing these impactful initiatives that encourage all to protect, preserve, and interact with our natural resources.  Since the inception of the program, two hundred fifty-two applications have been received over six rounds of funding made available. Fifty-six organizations throughout the eight-county region have been provided with funding and one hundred six projects have been successfully completed.

We are committed to cultivating and building upon this dynamic energy shared between our partners for the benefit of our residents and those who come to visit the beautiful Northwest PA region.
